TASK / PROJECT 1 EXERCISE 1

Audio Editing (05/05/25 - 02/06/25 Week 3 - 7)

We were provided with no sound video clip of Everything Everywhere All at Once along with subtitles scripts. We were assigned to do the dubbing and find relevant sound effect and ambience sound online and edit into final product.

We were divided into groups of 4 people to find the sound effect together. The sound effect could be downloaded from here :

Moving on I record the dubbing on my phone and export to my laptop. I began to export all files needed to Premiere Pro.

Next I put video into timeline and lock it because I'm not gonna edit the video.

For the male sound, I edit with pitch shifter to get a deeper voice.

TASK / PROJECT 1 EXERCISE 2

Sound Shaping (02/06/25 - 16/06/25 Week 7 - 9)

For the sound shaping exercise, we were told to record 10 of our voice speaking our first language. Then we were told to download Adobe Audition. We were assigned to shape our voice into :

  • Voice of phone call
  • Voice coming from inside of closet
  • Undergroung cave
  • Alien/Orc voice

I start recording my voice. It looks simple but I took many takes before getting the one I like and within 10 seconds.

Sound Shaping

After installing Adobe Audition , I import my voice file.

Voice of phone call

For the telephone sound here is my breakdown steps :

  • Rack effect - Filter and EQ - Parametric Equalizer

From there, I lower down the bass and treble while raising the mid sound into 845Hz.

Voice coming from inside of closet

For the voice coming from inside closet here is my breakdown steps :

  • Rack effect - Filter and EQ - Parametric Equalizer
  • Rack effect - Filter and EQ -  Reverb - Reverb

This one was quite hard for me. I know how it sounds but not the exact one. So I tried to figure out using different ways. As a result I make it muffled plus reverb. The muffled effet is to have a softened and like heard through a barrier. In addition I add reverb effect, just a little one, to give the echo sound. I play around with the decay and pre-delay time.

Undergroung cave

For the voice coming from underground here is my breakdown steps :

  • Rack effect - Reverb - Convolution Reverb - Impulse (massive cavern)

For the cave sound effect, Mr.Martin remined us that it should have a heavier echo than the closet one. Therefore I used the convolution reverb effect. At first It sounds to much echo and not clear what I am saying. So I lowered down the mix and higher up the damping LF and HF.

Alien/Orc voice

For the voice of alien here is my breakdown steps :

  • Rack effect - Time and Pitch - Pitch Shifter

As for the alien sound, we were free to change it into any sound, just not sounds like your original voice. So I decided to make high pitch and cute voice.

REFLECTION

Experience

Audio dubbing has always looks interesting for me. I've seen many online however, I have never tried to do one. In addition, I am also excited with the audio shapping exercise, I've ever tried to change my voice using application but using the software Adobe Audition was my first time. This was my first experience and it was definitely fun and exciting. Although I have some difficulities along the process, I manage to overcome it and are satisfied with the result.

Observations

I realize that audio dubbing isn't a simple thing to do. During the voice recording, I play the video alongside so I could sync my voice with the actors lips. Finding the sound effects and other background sound was not easy too, therefore having teamates to work together finding the sound effects is such a great idea. It was a process that needs patience. On the other hand, audio shapping exercise is more flexible, I could explore and try different sound which is quite fun.

Findings

Do not underestimate audio dubbing as an easy task, because it may looks simple but actually need a bunch of effort and attention to details in order to produce a good result. In addition, i've found out that in Adobe Audition there were so many different kind of sounds that can be produce just by a single click.
