TASK

Poster

In the first assignment of Project 1, we were assiged to design an instructable poster for any one recipe selected from Pasta Grannies youtube channel. We were told to study the video, breakdown and chunk the preparation and cooking process into an instructable poster also not to forget to capture each Grandma’s personality and unique dish identity in our poster as part of the narrative structure.

I begin to watch several videos from Pasta Grannies and decided to chose the video Easy Ricotta ravioli with tomato sauce! Personally for pasta itself, I find ravioli very interesting with the sqaure shape, I also love the ambience of the video where Granny Fiorina cook the pasta with the help of his son.

Moving on, I began to study the video, I note down about Grandma Fiorina and detailed steps for the ravioli recipe. I also include the ingredients and utensils used. After studying the video, I gather everything in a document. From here, I also learned the style of Grandma Fiorina with here detailed touches and will apply it to my poster. In addition, in the video her surroundings and house is more into cream and white interior which I would like to incorporate into my poster background.

Next, I search for references online.

Moving on, for the color palette, I am Italian color tone, combination of red, green and yellow with different shades.

After gathering references, Now I have ideas for the sketch.

Poster size 1240x1750px

Fig 2.4 Sketch (Week 4, 24/02/26)

After consultation with Mr.Martin, he suggested me to go with sketch #2 as it reflects a flow and is better for showing steps of cooking. However, he mentioned that the ingredient box on buttom right is not necessary.

I begin with the background. I used a cream vintage paper and masking it in for the base. As I want to show flow, I draw a lane using brush in Photoshop.

Below is the first draft, Mr.Martin mentioned that step number 2 bowl looks like an icon and doesn't really match with the other graphics, he suggested me to not modify into title bowl and not transparent. The pasta board also looks like plastic board and he suggested me to add wooden texture. Mr.Martin also mentioned that the font does not really match.

After the feedback, I work on the to enhance my design and complete drawing the vectors for the cooking steps. I also decided to draw the final look of the dish (Ricotta Ravioli with Tomato Sauce). I change the bowl for step 2 and add texture for the pasta board. In addition, I also change the font from Garamond into a more playful one 'Sauce Tomato'.

FEEDBACK

Week 5: This week is consultation for poster design, Mr.Martin mentioned that the text for each steps maybe can be shorten. The ricotta doesn't llok like one, maybe change the outline color. The bowl also looks like an icon, Mr.Martin sugeested me to draw anothe rone, not transparent and titled. The pasta board also looks like plastic, he suggested me to add wooden texture. the font looks so serious, maybe change another one.

REFLECTION

Experience
As someone who loves food, I really enjoy doing Project 1. The process of working on this project feels more enjoyable. Starting from chosing one video recipe from Pasta Grannies youtube, I became to know more about Italian food and get to explore their culture and traditions. While working on the poster, I was quite a lot of work since we need to draw all the vectors one by one, but I enjoy the process as I was excited to see what it'll come out as a poster.

Observation
What I've observed during the process of working on Project 1 is that preparring art direction and qualified references is very important to throughout the process. Such that in this project, it is more to Italian theme, then I should be focus on what style and color I want to stick with. I also observe that since we need to draw a lot of graphics, each one should have similar style of drawing.

Findings
From this project, I come to learn that turning a complicated recipe steps into a simple poster is possible. Just need to remember to include relevant graphics and sentence should be compact and conveying key message.
