Week 9 (16/06/25)

We were assign by Mr.Martin to fill the proposal slides up to synopsis.

First, we start with finding vfx effect tutorial that we would like to apply in our video.

VFX tutorial video:

Second, Mr.Martin told us to chose a tarrot card for out theme, we got Card 3 : Your Fear,"The Hanged Man". Below is the summary of the tarrot card and our story synopsis.

Week 10 (23/06/25)

We were assigned by Mr.Martin to test shot and edit 1 vfx effect. We were given 30 minutes to shot and edit in class.

Youtube tutorial: https://youtu.be/suL0aq_fqAI?si=LYXazorRfdIoKwZr (walking transition)

Below is the footage, we began to upload in After Effect to edit.

I start by using the pen tool to draw the postition that I want to mask, I change the mask feather and capacity to have a smooth transition. I made the first key frame and move forward the clip to add another key frames until the end of the clip.

I did the same thing to clip 2 also.

Week 11 (30/06/25)

This week, Jennifer and I work on the storyboard and shot list to make things easier on shooting day. For the storyboard, we decided to use photographs.

1. We find the visual references.

 Week 12 (07/07/25)

This week, we decided to do the shooting. We did all shooting around campus. The umbrella scene was the hardest, we repeat for several times in order to get the desired angle.

Below are a little behind the scene during the process:

After finish shooting, we compile all the clips into a drive folder.

Next, import all clips into Premier Pro to do color correction and color grading. For the first half of the video, we decided to apply blue tone, for the rest, we use warm color.

After color edit, we proceed to After Effect to edit the VFX effect. We used the effect 3 times, first is walking transition, second is umbrella transition and lastly, we apply the walking transition again. Below is the first walking transition.

This was made using mask, draw the surface that wanted to be mask, and mark the keyframe. Move 1 frame forward and repeat the same thing.

Moving on to the effect of taking out umbrella from phone. Prepare a clean background and the clip with Jennifer pulling out the umbrella from phone. The masking is made in the "umbrella" clip, mask from the edge of phone to below. The "phone" clip is to makesure the hands holding the phone appear eventhough it is masked in the umbrella clip. Here, the mask position is altered by seconds as the phone move. Lastly, the clip "floor mask" is the clean background.

This is the last effect, the walking transition again! The process is the same as above.

After saving these effects video, we proceed back to premier pro to further adjust the color, sound and text. We also cut the video from over 2 minutes to aorund 1 minutes.

We adjust the color to be more blue and the warm part to be more brown.

For some parts of video, we added cross dissolve effect to make transition smooth.

Moving on, we add text and apply video transition (cross fade) to make a smooth transition. The background was made dark to have visual contrast.

Subtitle were added to, to enhance the overall clarity.

For some clips, denoise effect were added to remove background noise.

For the walking transition part, we decided to add a narrative voice to add a nuance.

We added 3 different background music. The first one is soft emotional, second one is soft piano, third is happy emotional. These songs were picked to match the mood of the clip.

FEEDBACK

The story sysnopsis is good, however, there should be a scene that makes Felice realise about the need to have a break. The warm strong contrast is seen, however the cool tone is not really strong, could be adjust again. The text in the begining should have contrast to be seen clearly,. Lastly, cut the video to around 1 minute 20 seconds and add subtitles.

REFLECTION

Experience

It was a fun and exciting journey working on the final project. Although Jennnifer and I had so much of ideas at first, we decided to narrow it down to our topic. During the process, we were able to give our best creativity and explorations. However, editing the video was not an easy part, especially for the vfx effect, a lot of time was needed to fully focus. Nevertheless, I am grateful that we managed to complete this project on time.

Observation

What I observed is that a certain video angle is needed in order to make an effect works, such as the umbrella scene, I think we repeated that for about more than 10 times. I've observed when editing the effect, it should be step by step, frame by frame to have a smooth transition. Lastly, Feedback from Mr.Martin was a great help for us to improve on this project.

Findings

At the end of the day, I am able to improve my knowledge about shooting production, color correction, grading and to edit the vfx effect. With this, I understand that although the effects/transitions looks simple, it doesn't mean easy to do, time and dedication were needed alongway.
