TASK

Animated Poster

For the next task, we were required to use the Project 1 Instructable Infographic Poster as the base for a 60‑second animated infographic video that can be done in pair or individually.

I decided to do in pair with my friend Dafina Tsurayya since we had the did the same pasta for the poster which is ravioli, recipe is quite similar just different mine is dry hers is with soup. After finishing our poster, we decide on whose poster or recipe is gonna be used for the animation.

Fig 2.1 Pairing (Week 5, 04/03/26)

After discussion, we deal to work on Rayya's poster (Spoja Lorda) as the cooking steps are slightly more simple than mine. Next, we look up for references, style and animation. Youtube link for Pasta Granny Video (Spoja Lorda)

All references/moodboard and workflow can be see in this canva whiteboard

During week 5, we did brainstorm for our animation flow and drew a storyboard for it. From this note and rough sketch, now we can imagine how the animation will looks. So the video will be sectioned into 6 parts:

1.Intro
2.Ingredients
3.Making Dough
4.Making Filling
5.Shaping
6.Boiling Ravioli

Next, we decided on the color palete and font. For the color, we want it to reflect Italy as it's italian food so we play around with the color red, green and yellow. For the font itself, we're using 'Sauce Tomato' as ot reflects both playfullness and boldness from the heavy stroke. We also decided that the lightest yellow shade is for the text while the second lightest is for the background. We also tried several color combination as below.

After gathering all references, artsyle and storyboard, we started in After effect. Below is our first progress where I did the intro and Rayya did the ingredient part.

During week 6 online class, we showed Mr.Martin the 2 videos. He mentioned that we didn't do the animatics. However, because we have did the progress for the animation and he thinks that we work well together, the animation is tidy and got art style, he mentioned we can directly proceed with the animation but we should gather some references video for style and animation.

Moving on, we continue the next remaining parts: 3.Make Dough, 4.Make Filling, 5.Shaping, 6.Boiling

My part is number 3 and 5 while Rayya's work on number 4 and 6. To continue the animation, we still look up to the references and the style that we did for intro and ingredients. We also decided to meet up to do this project together.

Fig 2.9 Meeting in Library (Week 5, 09/03/26)

Before proceeding, I gather the vectors needed for the animation in one Illustration file. I separate each vector into different layers and name it accordingly.

Here is the progress for 3.Making Dough, here I used 2 null objects for transiton, play with the scale, position and rotation for the vectors and play with the color. Initially, this part was 18 seconds, it seems quite long and I narrow it to 12 seconds.

Here is the progress for 5.Shaping, here I used 3 null objects for transiton, I also play with the scale, position and rotation for the vectors and play with the color. Initially, this aprt was 20 seconds, and I narrow it to12 seconds also

After doing our parts, we now combine the clips, find music and sound effects to complement our video. Most of the sound effects were from freesound and pixabay. While for the music, we used a cooking jazz song from this youtube video. We meet up again in Library to compile everything.

Fig 2.18 Sound Effect & Song (Week 6, 10/03/26)

Initially, we will be using my laptop to combine the clips and add sounds. However, my After Effect is very lagging because of the green small bars, when preview the video keeps on getting stuck. So it's hard for me to arrange the sound of the video keeps on stopping.

Therefore, we decided to use Rayya's laptop to continue. Below is the first draft.

Fig 2.20 Animation Video Darft#1 (Week 6, 10/03/26)

After consultation with Mr.Martin during week 6 here are some inputs:

- intro & ingredients is already okay

- 2. Making Filling (Rayya's part):

  • 'put all ingredients' text crash with bowl
  • ricotta & cheese smash first before enter bowl
  • When ingredients get into the bowl, don't use scale
  • When put in salt & nutmeg, add small particle,
  • Put the egg inside bowl, then mix with spoon.

- 3. Shaping (Felice's part)

  • After rolling, just keep the dough same position (change the opacity)
  • When showing the dough folds, just play with opacity.
  • Cut into 5 pieces the dough then when cut each pieces, one ravioli appears.

- 4. Boiling Ravioli  (Rayya's part):

  • 3 pcs is too little, add ravioli into 6 pcs
  • When ravioli gets in the pan, don't play with the scale
  • Before the word 'bon apetite' can add smoke effect

After the consultation, we begin to work on to refine our video. I start of with keeping the dough the same for the rolling to the filling part.

The here I just change the opacity of the dough.

Lastly, I used masking to cut the dough into pieces of ravioli.

Below is the finalized step for 3.Shaping.

After finalizing everthing, we compile it into 1 video to adjust the sound effect and song. Then I upload the video into youtube as unlisted.

FEEDBACK

Week 6 (Online): Consultation for animation. Mr.Martin mentioned that we didn't do the animatics. However, because we have did the progress for the animation and he thinks that we work well together, the animation is tidy and got art style, he mentioned we can directly proceed with the animation but we should gather some references video for style and animation.

Week 6 (Offline): Mr.Martin gave us some inpus for the video. The sound effect and song was no comment. The intro and ingredients part was okay too. The one that need further refinement is Making Filling, Shaping and Boiling Ravioli part. For the Making Filling part, the text 'put all ingredients' text crash with bowl. Mr.Martin suggested the ricotta & cheese smash first before enter bowl. He mentioned that  when ingredients get into the bowl, don't change the scale into smaller. When put in the salt & nutmeg, we can add small particles. Also when crack the egg, put the egg inside bowl, then mix with spoon.

For Shaping part, Mr.Martin sugegsted after rolling, before filling text, just keep the dough same position (change the opacity). When showing the dough folds also just play with opacity. he also suggested us to cut into 5 pieces the dough, then when cut each pieces, one ravioli appears.

For the Boiling Ravioli part, Mr.Martin mentioned that 3 pcs of ravioli is too little and suggested us to add ravioli into 6 pcs. When ravioli gets in the pan, don't play with the scale scale. Lastly,  before the word Bon Appetite can add smoke effect

REFLECTION

Experience
As someone who loves food, I really enjoy doing this Final Project. The animation process, it was a great experience working with Rayya. She is a good partner and our communication runs well. Each of us has our own task delegation and gratefull that we can finish it before deadline as Rayya wants to finish up everything befor Hari Raya... hahaahaa

Observation
During the process of working on animation, a thorough process of breaking down the scene ssuch as storyboard is important before moving on to do animation. One work is also less for us since most of the graphics for animation is taken from the poster.

Findings
Adding relevant sound effect into animation is very crucial as it can directly change the mood of the whole video. However, it is also very important to set each each clips or scene to match the sound effect, usually I bring down the audio wave so I can pu thte sound accurately by pressing LL.
